John Cena, the 16-time WWE Champion, recently spoke to Collider about his career and his penchant for winning matches. He reflected on his infamous winning trend and addresses the “Big Match John” issue who had a reputation for never giving up and always overcome the odds, it would often be to the detriment of his opponents. The online fans made fun of the repeated result of Cena winning every time with the phrase “LOL Cena Wins”.

When asked about his infamous winning trend, he reflected on the balance between winning and losing, emphasizing that his focus was always on what was best for the business and the fans.

“There were times when I won a lot, and there were times when I lost a lot,” Cena explained. “I don’t necessarily think that is as impactful as it may seem. Whatever is best for the business and for the fans is exactly what I’ll do.”

He highlighted several key losses that stand out as pivotal moments.

“Some of the ones that come to mind are certainly The Rock in Miami (at WrestleMania 28) was a fantastic loss. Kevin Owens’ debut (at Elimination Chamber 2015) was another great one that I thought was a really fun one. Rob Van Dam at Hammerstein Ballroom (at ECW One Night Stand in 2006). Anytime you can surprise people.”

According to Cena, surprising fans is an important part of the business.

“Anytime you can surprise people, that’s kind of the life cycle of the business,” he said. “You come in an unknown, hopefully, you get the flywheel spinning, you create all this energy on your way out. You pay it forward, you pass it off.”

Cena also addressed the criticism he faced during the height of his career, when many fans believed his victories had become predictable. He acknowledged the importance of winning in creating impactful losses later in his career.

“One of the biggest hang-ups in the middle portion of my career was that, spoiler alert, John wins,” he said. “What people don’t understand is… I was in it for the long haul. The way you make those losses impactful is sometimes you’ve got to win. Sometimes you’ve got to win a lot.”
